About CAWA SCAN

Technology in service of coffee farmers

CAWA SCAN is an agricultural technology initiative exploring how image-based artificial intelligence can help farmers understand possible crop-health problems and access relevant agricultural information.

The problem

Leaf problems are easy to miss and hard to name

Coffee is one of Uganda's most important crops, and many farmers grow it on small plots. When leaves start to change colour or show spots, it is not always clear what is happening or whether it is serious. Expert advice is valuable, but it is not always close at hand when a problem first appears.

CAWA SCAN aims to give farmers a quick first look at possible leaf problems from a phone photo, together with plain information about what to check and when to ask an extension worker.

Coffee first

The first version focuses only on coffee leaves, starting with healthy leaves, coffee leaf rust and Phoma. Doing one crop carefully comes before doing many.

Honest about limits

Results are presented as AI-assisted information, not a diagnosis. When the AI cannot tell, CAWA SCAN says so instead of guessing.

A longer road

Maize, banana, tomato and beans are on the roadmap. Each will be added only after detection has been built and tested for that crop.

Where the project stands

  • CAWA SCAN is a prototype. The AI service that analyses photos is still being selected and tested on coffee leaf images.
  • Disease information and learning articles are drafts awaiting review by an agricultural specialist.
  • CAWA SCAN has no field-trial results, institutional endorsements or partnerships to report yet. We will only publish such information when it exists.
